Bearcats turning season around with a different look at the game

TRURO - The Truro Bearcats' dressing room was a poisonous place at the start of the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League season.

The team had missed the playoffs in their inaugural campaign the previous year and with most of that squad returning, nobody expected much from the group in Year 2. The poor attitude off the ice translated into a lackluster performance on it.

"Just a lot of negativity overall going into it," Bearcats defenceman Lucas Sangster said about the start of the season.

Out of the gate, the Bearcats quickly found themselves at the bottom of the 12-team league and currently hold a 2-16-2 record.

"Since nobody felt good about it, nobody wanted to play. Nobody wanted to try, they just expected we were going to be the 12th place team," said Sangster, a 14-year-old Amherst resident.

The start prompted the team and head coach Josh Boulton to part ways, bringing Stewiacke's Lou Lanceleve into the fold.

The players were hearing about the team's woes not only at the rink, but at school as well in ribbings from their friends on Monday mornings following a weekend of blowout losses.

But the teasing and the blowouts aren't happening anymore. Thanks to a change in attitude, the Bearcats have turned a corner. The wins aren't exactly rolling in yet, but they're putting the competition on notice they won't get an easy game against the red, white and black.

"They're a good group of boys and they're starting to see the results," Lanceleve said. "Nobody's kicking our butts anymore."

Case in point. Last weekend the Bearcats pushed the second-place Bubba Rays Gulls (14-3-2) to the brink, outshooting them 27-17 thanks to buying into systems put in place by the coaching staff and putting out the effort to make them work.

"That's saying something in itself," Lanceleve said of outshooting the Gulls, one of the league's most offensively gifted clubs. "The guys are buying in and getting some confidence and they're happy."

And that's what hockey is all about, Lanceleve said.

"At the end of the day they're just kids and they have to have fun and want to come to the rink," he said.

The Bearcats ended up losing 6-4 to the Gulls, but that's a far cry from the 7-1 drubbing in their first meeting of the season. Lanceleve said it won't be long before the wins start coming for the Truro squad.

"As a coach you have to present them with what helps them and they have to start doing it every game and stay at that level," he said. "Then they'll start banging on the door and eventually break through it. They're banging on the door now."

Even though there's still three and a half months left in the season, Sangster said he's already learned a valuable lesson about how attitude can affect a team.

"A lot of people think it's just that we're not skilled enough but with your attitude you can really start to improve and have a top team," he said.

Coach Crowe- New active co-ordinator

From the Amherst Daily News December 6th

SPRINGHILL – The title of being Springhill’s active living co-ordinator has been passed on, this time to a familiar face from the Cumberland County Jr B Blues alumni and summer activities programs.

Landon Crowe, the Goaltending Coach with the Truro Major Bantam Bearcats and graduate of the recreation and leadership program at the Truro campus of the Nova Scotia Community College, began his duties as the active living co-ordinator earlier this month and, despite being the busiest time of the year, says it is a good time for him to get started with his new responsibilities.

“A lot of fall programs are wrapping up so it’s been a really good time for me to contact the people who were offering activities, like Zumba and Tai Chi, and introduce myself and talk about re-offering in the New Year,” Crowe said.

As co-ordinator, Crowe will also be looking beyond the local area to see what services are being offered outside of the community to bring new opportunities here.

In other news, the Truro Bearcats have added longtime hockey local coach Steve Patton to the coaching staff.  Patton will be working with the development of the defence.

Bearcats host Newbridge Senators and Pictou Crushers

(Story Truro Daily News Sports)

Lou Lanceleve was named head coach of the Truro Major Bantam Bearcats on Wednesday evenning.

The 40-year-old Stewiacke resident likes teaching young players, watching them develop and realize the fruits of their hard work. So what better spot to coach than the Truro Bearcats major bantam hockey club.

"I'm very excited about it," Lanceleve said. "It's a good age to be involved with. It's a good opportunity and the kids are fun."

Lanceleve took over the reigns of the team earlier this week from former coach Josh Boulton, who elected to leave due to work commitments and to spend more time with his young family.

He will make his bench debut today when the Bearcats host the East Hants-based Newbridge Senators at 4:30 p.m. at Colchester Legion Stadium. The Bearcats host Scottsburn Crushers in Springhill tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Under Boulton, the Bearcats have gotten off to a 2-7-0 record for a three-way tie for ninth on the 12-team circuit. But Dave Ritcey, the team's vice president, stressed that Boulton's departure was not related to the team's start to the season.

"It had nothing to do with the record or anything like that," said Ritcey. "It was a mutual decision and no disrespect to Josh as he did a lot for our organization- we felt it was just time to make a change. He's a great guy and his efforts were very much appreciated by the organization."

Ritcey said he's happy with the decision to bring Lanceleve in.

"Lou is a guy who can bring excitement and energy to the team. He's a positive guy and at this level that's what you need."

Lanceleve is not looking to make major changes to the groundwork already laid. Rather, he just wants to make playing hockey enjoyable for the players.

"I just want to make it fun for the kids and develop them," he said. "We'll put that together and at the end of the day we'll see what happens."

Lanceleve has three sons currently playing hockey - Colby, Truro junior A; Carson, Truro peewee AAA; and Reid, Brookfield bantam A. He last coached at the atom AAA last season with Carson's team. A former player who competed up to the senior level, he also has coaching experience with Brookfield's junior B squad.

Although he wants to make things fun for his players, he also expects a desire to improve.

"If it's not fun they won't come to the rink. That being said, to play at this level you have to be wiling to compete day in and day out."

Hockey Canada and Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador are also hosting an Atlantic Bantam Female Skills Challenge at both the Mile One Centre and Twin Rinks in St. John’s on Thursday, November 11 and Friday, November 12. This event will feature seven of the top female Bantam-level players from each of the Atlantic Canadian branches, along with one coach from each of the four Atlantic provinces.

The 28 players and four coaches from New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island were selected based upon their performances at the 2010 Atlantic Challenge Cup, held October 8-11 in Moncton, N.B.  One of the Nova Scotia participants will be Truro Bearcats defenseman Mallory Rushton of Amherst.

Message to the to Parents and Players

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am writing this letter to encourage all parents to register your son/daughter for the Truro Major Bantam AAA summer evaluation camp to be held in August. If you receive this message and have already registered then I would like to thank you for your support.

The evaluation camp is the beginning of the process to select the team for the upcoming 2010-11 season. This camp will provide coaching staff with critical evaluation to begin to shape our team. It will provide your son/daughter with upwards of 8-10 hours of ice time including practice, skill development, off ice training/evaluation and intrasquad games. As well each registrant will receive a keeper Jersey for their participation. Attendance at camp is required to be considered for the team.

There appears to be many rumours out there about this program. While this is a franchise situation, our ownership group is focused on this being a community minded endeavour. There is no profit planned or budgeted for SRM Hockey nor is the camp considered a "money grab". I have no children and no reason to support or be involved in such an endeavour other than the fact I have played at this level growing up in Truro and coached at this level, and without this team a wonderful opportunity for learning and skill development would be lost. Also, I, along with our group, recognized that without this program in our Zone, our young Bantam aged hockey stars will be overlooked for the HNS developmental programs. This program will allow our young budding hockey stars from our region at the Bantam level to play against the best competition and at the highest level in Nova Scotia. They will need to play at this level if they desire to move onto Major Midget and Junior.

We will deliver a professionally run program and organization, skill development, a learning atmosphere, and a fun hockey environment. The league in which we will compete will have a schedule that involves less travel, less overnight stays, less rigorous tournament schedules and more "free" weekends for family activities throughout the winter.

Our home arena is Truro, and we will be the Truro Bearcats. We will be required to schedule some games in Amherst or Springhill as part our scheduling process. Our region is the northern zone of Nova Scotia. We have had a very good response from kids and parents from the northern part of our zone.

Our fees are in line with current rep fees when paying at the AAA level. Parents are asked to raise $ through various fundraising events throughout the year. The Ownership group through sponsors and our own funds will ensure the program is delivered. For the registration, the player receives a set of jerseys, team wear, use of hockey helmet, gloves and a shell. There is a payment schedule that was outlined at the parent information sessions that were held earlier in the year so the registration is not all due upon selection to the team.

We have hired Josh Boulton as our Head Coach. He brings a good perspective of the game and youthful leadership to the team. His recent coaching endeavour has been with  Brookfield Jr B Elks. He played and was a leader on his teams in his former playing career. He played for the Truro Junior A Bearcats for a few years.

Deadline for registration is June 22nd. This program is needed for the development of hockey in the northern region. We attempted to mitigate the costs as much as we could to delivery the best program possible. I trust this email finds everyone in good health and good cheer as we head into summer. Please register you son/daughter for the evaluation camp and provide them a wonderful opportunity to be involved in a professionally run organization where the PLAYER (KID) is first over all else!

All the best,

Jon Stanfield

MJAHL introduces new name, logo and marketing strategy

Friday, June 11th 2010

The Maritime Junior “A” Hockey League began a new era in junior hockey on Friday as the Board of Governors unanimously approved a new branding initiative that sees the league receive a new name, logo and overall marketing strategy. As of today, the league is now called the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League).

Central to this rebranding is the introduction of a clean, memorable new logo. The MHL logo features three stars within the crest that serve two purposes. Firstly, each star represents each one of the three Maritime Provinces that host MHL franchises. Secondly and most important, they emblemize three key MHL brand pillars: Education, Elite Sport and Leadership.

“The goal of this rebranding is to make the league current, modern and professional”, explains MHL Board of Governors Chairman John Lynn. “We believe that the new name, look and numerous marketing components of this strategy will assist in adding more sponsor value and help grow the fan bases of all 11 teams.”

The rebranding efforts were carried out by Clary Flemming and Dan Mailman of Clary Flemming & Associates of Bedford. “The new brand is to better reflect the evolution, growth and changing business philosophy of the Maritime Junior Hockey League” says Flemming.  The centre piece logo is modern, professional and iconic which should appeal to both the existing fan base and the younger demographic”.

And appealing to the young demographic is a key component of the new initiative. A core element is to market to the family demographic, promoting MHL games as quality family entertainment. The MHL will introduce regular promotions as a means to introduce new fans to its hockey.

“The promotions will be geared to engage the community, gain new, repeat visits to MHL games and focus on youth and parental involvement”, adds Lynn. “The new brand coupled with these promotions will serve to attract new fans that might not normally be exposed to our product.”

In addition to promotions, the rebranding is a multi-faceted plan that will introduce a number of new promotional tools with a focus on consistency in communications. A revised web site will be introduced as soon as possible and teams will be provided with consistent MHL branded radio and newspaper advertising templates that can customized for use at the local level. Other marketing collateral such as posters, banners, fan memorabilia and arena audio spots to recognize sponsors will be used to further enhance the brand.

“The foundation has been laid and the team ownership are now committed to a new brand that reflects our new business strategy” says Lynn. “The new brand is sculpted to reflect league philosophy and offer a fresh, youthful image as we move forward as a league. We are very excited about this initiative and we are greatly looking forward to rolling out each piece over the next several months”.

With the new brand underway, the league now shifts focus to the MJAHL Draft which takes place at the Bridgewater Memorial Arena on Saturday at 1:15pm. At the draft, awards for Coach of the Year, Executive of the Year and the new MJAHL Builders Award will be handed out. For all of the draft selections in real-time, as well as award winners, visit MJAHL.com.

Bearcats entering new major bantam circuit

TRURO – A new age of hockey is dawning in Colchester/Cumberland Counties.

A trio of prominent Truro businessmen have pooled their resources and started a team that will compete in the newly formed Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League next season.

"We're really excited," said Dave Ritcey, a partner in SRM Hockey Inc. with Jon Stanfield and Greg Mullen. "We all have a vested interest, obviously, but we want to put kids on the ice."

The Truro Bearcats will represent the Fundy Region (Colchester and Cumberland counties) in the 12-team circuit, which was formed by Hockey Nova Scotia in late February.

However, at that time, Fundy was the only region not icing a team. Ritcey, Stanfield and Mullen took notice and went about getting the area included.

"We got together and chatted and we just felt like kids in this area should have the opportunity to play without having to travel to Pictou County or the city," Ritcey said. "We felt it was important for our kids to have the same opportunity as others in the province."

The team was approved in late March, but since it's a month later in starting than its counterparts, there are still plenty of issues to iron out.

The club is currently looking for a coach, which it hopes to have in place by May 30 to give the winning candidate time to plan for training camp in late August. The season is set to get underway in mid-September.

The league is holding a board of governors meeting this weekend. SRM then plans to have an information meeting with the parents of players interested in trying out on May 1 in Springhill and Truro outlining the team and league. Truro's meeting will be at the Best Western Glengarry from 3 to 5 p.m. while the Springhill session will be at the Anne Murray Community Centre from 10 a.m. to noon.

"We know there are a lot of questions out there and we want to get them answered as soon as possible," Ritcey said.

The team will practice and play in Truro the majority of the time, but will also use other rinks in the region.

The team will also be involved in the communities it encompasses through volunteer work and other activities, something Ritcey said he feels is important.

"We want to use this as a development tool for the kids on and off the ice," he said. "We want to create an identity and make sure each community knows what we're about.

"We want to develop good young people through hockey."

But Ritcey is also excited about giving young players the chance to play at the highest level possible.

"It's just a great opportunity for the kids," he said. "They are going to get the opportunity to play and compete at a higher level."
