Thanksgiving weekend the O'Regan's Subaru Western Hurrincanes family will see two of the 2017/18 roster members head to Moncton to compete in the Atlantic Challenge Cup. Luke Woodworth and Ryan Hopkins will be part of the HNS U14 squad. They will compete in a tournament against the top U14 players from NL, NB AND PEI.

INTRODUCING THE WESTERN HURRICANES 2017/18 SEASON TEAM LEADERS

Western Hurricanes Team Leaders for the 2017/18 NSMBHL Season.
Assistant Captain Konnor Benjamin is from Bridgewater, NS in his second season with the Western Hurricanes. Konnor attends Bridgewater JR High for grade 9. This is Konnor's last year of Bantam hockey as well Jr. High School.

Captain Will Chisholm lives in Lunenburg, NS the home of the Bluenose. Will is also a second year veteran of the Hurricanes. Will attends Bluenose Academy in Lunenburg and is also in his last year of Bantam hockey and Jr.High School.

Assistant Captain Lawson Cook comes from Hubbards, NS. CAlso in his second season with the team. His Grade 9 year is at Forest Heights Community High School in Chester Grant. This will also be Lawson's last season of Bantam as well.

These three boys all possess great attitude, confidence and commitment to their teammates and team. Their positive attitudes are infectious and will bring the best out of their fellow teammates. They will be a great trio to lead their team through the NSMBHL season!

Hurricanes Checking Clinic for Players & Goalies

The Western Hurricanes will be holding a HNS Sanctioned checking clinic on April 23rd at the LCLC in Bridgewater. This will be for all players and goalies requiring a checking clinic before our Spring ID Camp, or players requiring the clinic before next season.

After a hard working training camp that saw the team steadily improve, the BMO Western Hurricanes Major Bantam Hockey Club are pleased to announce the roster for the 2014 - 2015 Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League season. Summer Camp Starts in 5 Days

The entire BMO Western Hurricanes organization are eager to get summer evaluation camp underway and the wait is only 5 more days. Players will be reporting to camp on Wednesday, August 21st ready to compete and try to earn a 2013 - 2014 roster spot.

Hurricanes Win Both Games on Home Opener Weekend

A consistent team effort from all players resulted in an 8 - 0 win over Pictou County on Saturday evening in front of a large supportive crowd cheering on the home opener. On Sunday morning, Hurricane players accelerated the effort on route to a 5 - 0 victory over the same Pictou squad.

To date, we hold 3 wins and a tie in NSMBHL regular season action, tied for second place in the 12 team provincial league scoring a total of 17 goals with only 2 against.

Next weekend, the NSMBHL shuts down for Thanksgiving weekend and the Atlantic Challenge Cup.

Next up, the Hurricanes host the Nova Jr. Xmen on October 13th and 14th at Queens Place. Stay tuned for further details on this home game series.

Hurricanes Continue to Roll in Exhibition Play

A Monday night home game exhibition contest against the Valley Wildcats ended up in a 6 - 0 win for your Hurricanes.

Tonight, at home again in front of a supportive crowd at Queens Place in Liverpool, Hurricane players came out with a solid work ethic at both ends of the ice on route to an 8 - 1 win over the Halifax Hawks.

The team will head down the 103 on Thursday evening for a 6:00 pm contest against the Hawks at the Halifax Forum.

Good Weekend for Hurricanes Prospects

With a two game home and home exhibition series this past weekend against Newbridge Academy, Hurricane prospects came away with an 11 - 1 win on the road Saturday and a 5 - 1 win at home on Sunday.

Three Home Exhibition Games over Next 4 Days

Hurricanes Win Bronze Medal at Provincials

It may not be exactly the medal color your Hurricanes were after, but a bronze medal in this highly competitive NSMBHL Provincial Championship tournament is certainly something to be proud of.

From the onset of the Provincial tournament, your Hurricanes did everything in their power to set themselves up to win gold. The team won all 4 preliminary games to be in first place after the round robin portion of the tournament.

Here`s how the story went: In game # 1 on Thursday, your Hurricanes opened up with a 4 - 1 victory over Newbridge Academy Senators in a spirited and physical game. Then, with two games on Friday, they defeated the Bedford Barons 5 - 0 in a early afternoon tilt and again took home a 3 -2 victory against the Valley Wildcats in a night game that saw a huge crowd at Queens Place cheering on their Hurricane players. With a quick turn around and a chance to clinch first place, the Hurricanes again came out flying against the Cape Breton Cougars on route to a 9 - 1 win on Saturday morning. With 4 straight wins and a first place seeding in their back pocket, it was now rest time to prepare for their semi - final match up against the Bedford Barons (4^th seed) on Sunday morning. The other 2 teams to qualify for the semi-finals were Halifax Hawks (2nd seed) and Bay Gulls. (3rd seed)

In the semi-final game, the Barons came out with 3 quick goals in the first 9 minutes of the first period and had the Hurricanes on the ropes. But, as shown all season, Hurricane players know how to battle. With a quick chance to collect themselves and re-focus, the Hurricanes applied lots of offensive pressure and got a goal at the end of the first and another midway through the second period to get them right back in it and make it 3-2 as they headed into the third period.

The third brought more great play by the Hurricanes and a large amount of quality chances with 5 or more pucks hitting posts and crossbars and pucks just sliding by open nets but when the final buzzer sounded, despite the Hurricanes outshooting Bedford by a large margin of 38 - 18, the tying goal eluded them. The final score was 3 - 2 Bedford. A heartbroken group that won the NSMBHL Championship Banner gave everything they had and put on a great display for their fans.

The Hurricanes would like to thank all the huge crowds that came out to support the team all weekend and also watch all the participating teams in this NSMBHL Provincial Championships. Amazing crowds all weekend were raving about the top quality brand of hockey that the players of the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League displayed. Also, huge thanks to all the dedicated folks who volunteered their time this weekend to put on this tournament from the 50 - 50 sales, ticket sales, opening ceremonies and a fabulous hospitality room. Thanks to our tournament Chair Ian Creaser, Co - Chairs Janet Creaser and Janet Baker who hosted a class act tournament. Western Nova Scotia hospitality and professionalism at its finest !

Now … Back to hockey! In the other semi -final, the Bay Gulls battled their way to a 3 - 2 win over the Halifax Hawks creating a Bedford vs. Bay Gulls Championship game. The Championship saw the Bay Gulls win 3 - 1 over Bedford. Both semi - finals and the Championship game were played with high pace, skill and end to end action. Fans were treated to a great day of hockey watching the top Bantam aged hockey players in Nova Scotia. It is sometimes hard to believe these young hockey players and future prospects are only 13 and 14 years old.

Congratulations to the Bay Gulls on their win and who will certainly represent the NSMBHL and province well at the Irving Oil Major Bantam Atlantic Championships beginning on March 29 in Halifax. The Halifax Hawks will also represent our league as the host team.

Other Hurricane Highlights:

1) During the opening ceremonies on Thursday, the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League presented it`s league awards. The Hurricanes players and coaching staff were presented with the NSMBHL Championship Banner and League Championship trophy for leading the league for the second straight year. Two Hurricanes players had their name called to receive NSMBHL awards: Jordan Messenger was named to the 2nd Team League All Star Team as a forward and Mitch Baker was named to the 1st Team All Star Team as a defenseman. Congratulations guys!

2) Rookie forward Travis Parks won the shootout competition during the tournament skills competition by getting 4 out of his 5 breakaway chances through the opposing goaltender.

3) Following the Saturday afternoon skills competition, the award winners for the provincial tournament were announced. A few Hurricane players were honoured for their solid play over the weekend: Cole Mulrooney was named All Star defenseman, Matt Quigley was named All Star Forward, Jordan Messenger was named Top Scorer for the Tournament and Aaron Mantle received the Top Goaltender Award and Tournament MVP. Congratulations guys!

Another great season was had by the Hurricanes Major Bantam Hockey Program. We repeated as NSMBHL League Champions, made every semi-final or final of all tournaments entered and compiled an overall record of 44 wins, 10 loses and 3 ties. The team was a group of talented and hard working players on the ice and greater people off the ice. Most importantly, the Hurricanes Hockey Program has prepared and developed players for the next level and their rookies to take over leadership of the Hurricanes and carry on the standard and tradition of Hurricanes Hockey !

Waking up early Saturday morning to board the bus for a road trip to Cape Breton with a focus on returning home with two victories was top priority. Your BMO Western Hurricane players did excatly that by erurting with 9 goals in a 9-2 victory on Saturday night. An early wake up call Sunday morning and a good breakfast prepared for the players had them heading to the rink ready to sweep the weekend. A hard fought game from start to finish had your Hurricanes come out with a 3-2 win. The scoring, playmaking and strong battle level was well spread out through the line up from forwards and defensemen and the goaltending tandem were really solid between the pipes. The real big win during this fun weekend was the Hurricanes complete team of players, parents and staff who had lots of time to assemble, sharing stories and laughs whether it was on the bus, during the team meals or the team hospitality room at the hotel. All this combined with a perfect itenerary made for a great weekend !

The Hurricanes now turn their attention to practice this week in preperation for a road game Friday evening against the Valley Kings Mutual Wildcats and a home game in Barrington on Sunday afternoon vs. Newbridge Academy. Sunday afternoons game at home vs. Newbridge will see your Hurricanes displaying their support for Breast Cancer Awareness when they host their Pink in the Rink game. Weekend Sweep of Dartmouth Ice Dawgs

Your BMO Western Hurricanes are moving very close to the top in the NSMBHL standings after winning both road games this weekend against a hard working Dartmouth MCK Ice Dawgs squad.

On Saturday night, Hurricanes players managed to overcome much adversity and playing shorthanded for most of the first and second period. The great work on the PK was on display as Hurricane penalty killers held the Ice Dawgs to very little opportunities. Players continued to work hard and cashed in with five unanswered goals; two by Keith Getson, singles from Isaac Bridge, Cameron Jacquard and Christopher Goreham. A solid defensive effort by everyone in limiting Dartmouth to nine shots had a focused Jacob Key earn a shutout for his squad.

On Sunday afternoon, the MCK Ice Dawgs came out hard from start to finish but strong crease work by Hurricanes goaltender Aaron Mantle and battle level by the D-Men held Dartmouth to only one goal as Hurricane shooters Jack Creaser, Matt Quigley and Ty Duffus scored three timely goals. Make the final: Hurricanes 3, Dartmouth 1.

After Sunday's game, along with the win, the team presented Head Coach Brad Muise with a beautiful "Cake Boss" like Western Hurricanes cake to celebrate his birthday. With some hungry hockey pleayers, the cake didnt last very long !

This upcoming weekend, your BMO Western Hurricanes jump on the bus Saturday morning to travel to Cape Breton to play the Cape Breton Major Bantam Cougars in a weekend series in North Sydney.

Your BMO Hurricanes entered the weekend with the task of facing the Bedford Barons and league leading Bay Gulls.

Entering Saturday's game in Bedford, your Hurricanes and Bedford were tied for 3rd place in the 12 team NSMBHL. It was evident from the start, Hurricane players were ready to play. With a strong forcheck and battlle level down low, timely scoring, solid play by all D pairings and great goaltending, your Hurricanes came out on top with a 5 - 1 victory to grab sole possession of third place.

On Sunday, the second road game of the weekend took us to the Halifax Forum to face the league leading Bay Gulls. With a victory, your Hurricanes would be tied with the Gulls for top spot in the league standings. With this on the line, both squads played a game comparable to playoff speed and intensity. Despite being around the Gulls net all afternoon, outchancing and outshooting the Gulls, Hurricane shooters were snake bitten all afternoon. A really solid, entertaining hockey game from start to finish, constatntly putting pressure on the Bay Gulls, your Hurricanes could only manage to slide one goal by the Bay goaltender. When the final buzzer sounded, the very good Gulls team came out on top with a 2 -1 victory. With a split of this weekends games, we now have sole possesion of third place entering the Thanksgiving Holiday break.

The Hurricanes have Thanksgiving weekend off to relax with family and friends while the NSMBHL does not have any games scheduled due to the U14/U15/U16 Atlantic Challenge Cup. The Hurricanes family wish all the best to Hurricane players Keith Getson who will represent Nova Scotia on the U14 team, Morgan Lunn who will represent Nova Scotia on the U15 team and Allie Munroe who will represent Nova Scotia on the female U15 team. Good luck to all three.

Two very entertaining hockey games were played this weekend at the Bridgewater Arena when your BMO Hurricanes hosted the Cape Breton Cougars and Halifax Hawks on Saturday and Sunday evening.

The Western Hurricane Major Bantam Hockey Club is about developing players to move on to the next level and an opportunity has already come to one of our own.

Although Sunday was an extremely disappointing day for the Hurricane squad the players dealt with the emotion of it the best they could as a season came down to one game and a few bounces in the Semi Final game.

Even as we look back at the effort that came in not just the third but the entire game we couldn't be more proud of our kids that last April we were hoping would be a top four team.

The stick raising ceremonial salute to the parents and Hurricane fans after the Halifax Hawks left the ice had every parent, grandparent and true Hurricane fan holding back water filled eyes.

On this Sunday, in the AppleDome in Berwick, the Hurricane were not number one on the score sheet but they sure were and always will be number one in our hearts.

Hurricane in Semi Finals vs Halifax

In a hard fought match the Hurricane played to a draw that had the Bubba Ray Gulls squeak out the tie with a late powerplay goal.

However with a berth in the semi finals the Hurricane will face the Halifax Hawks at 10:30 am in the AppleDome. The Hurricane have been well feed and look forward to a good nights rest as Hurricane Sunday will display the best "Hurricane Hockey" effort yet.

Fans; get to the AppleDome in Berwick and cheer on your Hurricane squad as no doubt there will be a battle for the much needed win. This one is guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seats.

X-Men fall to Hurricane

The Hurricane were facing an Xmen squad that always came to play against them and to their credit today in the Appledome was no exception.

From the opening drop the first penalty was called on the Xmen and not really the start they had envisioned but to their credit they managed to kill it off. The Xmen would find their legs but were on the losing end of the territorial battle and would soon find themselves down a player again. This time though they managed to pounce on a loose puck and create a short-handed breakaway that just slid by the outstretched pad of Wile who was trying to deny access to the side.

With the Xmen up one the Hurricane would answer late in the first as they kept applying pressure and Benight (Shatford, Mann) connected on a nice tic tac toe play where Bronsen caught the keeper sliding the wrong way as he shifted to his backhand to slide it home.

The battle was brewing and the Hurricane were working hard to shut down any offense from the Xmen when Stone Harnish (Cooke, Jollimore) drove the crease to punch through a puck lying in the goal crease that Keegan had sent in from the corner. After a brief huddle of the Zebras the goal stood and the Hurricane were up one.

Some breathing room was created for the Hurricane fans as Alex Mann (Jollimore, Shatford) one timed a point shot along the ice that found the inside of the far post and the Hurricane were up two.

To the Xmen credit it wouldn’t end that easy and they answered just a minute and a half later on a nice shot from the top of the circle to bring them within one at the close of the second.

Effort on both sides were making things interesting through the third and the Hurricane were forced to kill two penalties to keep the Xmen off the board and with time winding down the Xmen were all in as the goalie was pulled. The clock expired as did the season on the Xmen against the Hurricane but the Xmen put forth an effort that showed they belonged amongst the league’s best. The Hurricane overcome their toughest battled of the weekend so far and it says a lot about the program that Dave Hinkley and the Xmen coaching staff have put together.

Hurricane rock the Apple Dome

What has become known as “Hurricane Hockey” was in full display from the opening whistle and the Storm tried to hold on but within the first five minutes Mitch Baker (unassisted) fired the first to get things going. With just under four minutes to go, the second dagger left its mark as Bronsen Benight (Jollimore, Messenger) capitalized.

The second period didn’t start any better for the Storm as the Hurricane potted their third just thirty seconds in with a goal by Jordan Messenger (Jollimore, Mann). Follow that less than a minute later with a goal by Morgan Messenger (Cooke, Mann) and the Hurricane were making a statement.

Penalty trouble was evident as the Storm had a steady stream making their way to the sin bin as the pace of the Hurricane was tough to match.

The third period was more of the same as the Hurricane chased the Storm keeper late in the game after scoring two more as Morgan Messenger(Benight, Nickerson) notched his second and Catherine Tufts(Shatford, Cooke) added markers. Alex Nauss (Mann, Adams) came off the half wall and roofed a shot short side to post the Hurricane seventh.

This weekend, 19 collective Hurricanes are forecasted to land in Bewick starting tomorrow. Hurricanes Provincial Bound

The Hurricanes worked hard all year to earn the top spot and faced many adversities in achieving the number one seed going into the playoff mini series against the 12^th seed Dartmouth Ice Dawgs. The message was clear do not take this team lightly, the series, with a few bounces and some hot goaltending is not long enough to recover from.

Facing Dartmouth in game one in Barrington where a huge crowd turned out to support the kids the Hurricane looked to notch a victory. The Ice Dawgs were playing a very good game in the first couple of periods and being down just one going into the third they had put in some good competitive minutes and were within striking distance. The third period traditionally has been owned by the Hurricanes and in Barrington on this night there would be no surprises. With Morgan Messenger completing the hat trick and singles from Shatford and Benight lighting the lamp, the real difference was a collective effort by each forward to increase their effort and pressure to shut down the Ice Dawgs from mustering any dangerous attacks. The Hurricane were just a little two strong in the final frame making the final Hurricane 5 – Ice Dawgs 2

Game 2 of the series would take place in the Sportsplex in front of the Dartmouth hometown supporters hoping to see their Ice Dawgs push through for a game three. The game would be more in line however with the Hurricane performances of the past as the backend did a good job of moving pucks to alleviate any pressure. With only one breakdown, where Peterson made a huge glove save, the game was never in question. With two quick goals to open the third the Ice Dawgs hopes of a game three where pretty much shelved. The hard working Hurricane were leaving little doubt that they would earn the first berth into the provincial tournament. With goals by Cooke, Messenger, Jollimore and Harnish to pace the offense, it was the fact that the Hurricanes gave up only nine shots in a nice defensive effort that sealed the win. Make the final Hurricane 4 – Ice Dawgs 0.

Hurricanes win the best of three series 2 games to none and are off to Berwick for Provincials!

The Hurricane got things started with a power play goal late in the first period off a point shot with a favorable rebound for Morgan Messenger (Jollimore, Mann). The Hawks would answer in the second though at the four and half minute mark as Bezanson (Yochoff, Boyd) buried the loose puck as the Hurricanes couldn’t get rid of the rebound.

The third period allowed for some adjustments and the Hurricane would play a more solid third and it started with Alex Mann (Shatford) who found the back of the net. Once again the Hawks answered and quickly on a power play of their own. A nice back door one timer found its mark and put the score even again.

However the Hurricane picked up the pace and shut down the Hawks the remainder of the third and with just under five minutes remaining Josh Shatford (Mann) on the power play redirected the point shot to put the Hurricane up 3-2. The Hurricane weren’t done as the Hawks d-men tried to put on more pressure but gave up some odd man rushes that put the game out of reach as Shatford(Benight) slipped the puck five hole as he cut across the net and got the Hawks net minder to open up. The insurance came when Bronsen Benight ( Shatford, Jollimore) wrapped a puck around the net with two minutes to go.

The game was much closer than it appeared on the score sheet as Wile made some key saves along the way. The rivalry heats up as we head towards the provincials but for now the Hurricane find a way to win again and take the series head to head matchup and the game.

Backdoor passes just wide, open net misses, deflections that took just a bit too much off the shot and yes more goalie robbery than Houdini, making pucks disappear before they could find the back of the net. Yet specialty teams can sometimes be an advantage and if you let up on your power play thinking there is no pressure Ty Duffus (Harnish) will blow by you and find the five hole with five minutes left in the second.

Shot after shot, saves, miss fires, broken sticks and yet more chances. In what could have easily been a blow out the Hurricane only managed one more on the power play from Jollimore (Nickerson) on a pass/shot that managed to squeeze in early in the third.

A good defensive effort as Wile posted his league leading seventh shutout and a relatively easy night between the pipes. Make the final Hurricane 3 – Dawgs 0 from the Sportsplex in Dartmouth

Valley and Hurricane in Dog fight

The Wildcats stepped up their play today and had some good back pressure and fore check on the Hurricane squad. The Valley’s hard work allowed them to capitalize on a late chance, Blanchard (Moody, Thibeault), to open the scoring much like yesterday’s with just twenty seconds remaining in the first.

The Hurricane had chances but failed to find the target as shots hit post, slipped through pads and missed nets. The Valley on the other hand found the mark as Ryan Parker (Janes, Tidman) fired a nice shot to capitalize on one of the few opportunities the Hurricane would give up to go up two heading into the third frame.

The Hurricane were feeling pretty good playing some gritty hockey against Halifax and taking care of both Bedford and Fredericton earlier on leaving Cole Harbour as the last obstacle. You would think with previous efforts that this, all things being equal, with another hard work effort would provide a favorable result. That is …all things being equal. With Keegan Cooke already unavailable for an undetermined amount of time and Jordan Messenger not quite ready to return, more injuries were not in the plan. Morgan Lunn gets a lower body injury and is forced to sit. Christian Tufts suffers an upper body injury and a few minutes into the game Mark Jollimore joins the newly formed pine sitting group and not one of them are all that happy about it.

Cole Harbour with some newly found jump coming off some great wins at the RCL are reveling in the excitement and momentum that winning brings and it was evident they were going to battle the Hurricane today.

Alex Mann set the Storm back a bit though when he fired a blast from the point to open the scoring. Cole Harbour to their credit kept coming and soon found themselves tied 1-1 with Hurricane. Then some penalty trouble and discipline issues erupted, not unjustly, but being right doesn’t have much value as you head to the sin bin. Forced to kill off penalties for a lot the game Cole Harbour finally capitalized on a 5-3 and then again on a 5-4 to open up an insurmountable lead with only 3 minutes remaining on the game clock or …..was it?

Key in the Hurricane attack and if you were fortunate enough to be in attendance at the County arena you witnessed an effort even the Hurricane didn’t know they had. Puck pursuit, speed and Cole Harbour were caught standing, collapsing, grasping on to their win. Less than 2 minutes…. BANG… the first dagger was fired and the lead cut to one with the Hurricane goalie Peterson on the bench for the extra attacker.

Puck dropped; fired in Cole Harbour’s end deep; absolutely no doubt a Hurricane player will get there first as Peterson heads to the bench once more. Hurricanes battle …moving...firing …BANG TIED GAME. Hurricanes needing the win to advance… time remaining 19 seconds… it could just be enough. These kids make you believe!

After a long break the Hurricane returned to game action and found themselves taking on the Bedford Barons in game one of the Legion Tournament from Cape Breton. Some good practice with some strong work ethic would hopefully strip off at least a layer of any layoff rust build up.

While the first period provided chances for the Hurricane a little better result on the score sheet was expected but so be it the pace was good, board play was evident and it would be just a matter of time. Sure enough early in the second the Hurricanes struck as Josh Shatford (unassisted) tickled the twine off a scramble down low to open the scoring. The Hurricane would add their second on the power play and it only took a few seconds as Morgan Messenger (Shatford, Benight) received a nice pass for a one timer from Shatford and placed the puck over high over the blocker. Jake Wile made a great pad save on a cross ice pass from the corner to the left hand slot by attacking the shooter and firing out his right leg to shut down Bedford’s best scoring chance.

In the third the Hurricane scored again when the Bedford defense got caught a little flat footed as Bronsen one touched the puck to a streaking Morgan Messenger who saw the defense part like the Red Sea to send him in all alone. A quick shot low beat the Baron netminder to put the Hurricanes up three.

The Hurricane team outshot the Barons 17-7 according to the official scorer and a good effort was seen from all three lines that admittedly all had chances.

The road will get a little rougher on Friday as the Hurricane will need to solid efforts against the Fredericton Canadians and the Halifax Hawks if a bid to get to the finals is in the cards. Make the final Hurricane 3- Barons 0 live from the County Arena in Sydney.

Hurricanes Pack Their Bags

The Royal Canadian Legion Challenge Cup is being held in Sydney from 6-9 January, 2011. Your BMO Western Hurricanes swing into action Thursday 6 January at 7:30pm against the Bedford Barons. Two games on Friday against Halifax and Fredericton Caps are followed by a fourth round-robin game Saturday against the Harbour Storm. That completes the round-robin play and it will be the top two teams from each division who will advance to semis and then finals.

Coaches Christmas present comes early

Playing in coach Dodman’s home rink growing up brought back a lot of fun memories for him and the Hurricanes were enjoying their game in the sunny Eastern Shore as well. Scoring early and often the whiteboard would get most of the day off as things went pretty much in the Hurricanes favor. When the Storm traded goalies they quickly realized that it wasn’t going to change much.

With the Hurricane turning up the heat, the rink was still surprisingly cold and the follicly challenged bench staff enjoyed the official “Toque Trial Day”. It was good to see the team find their way back to “Hurricane Hockey” though. Team speed, effort on the fore check and puck protection were all off the chart on a few shifts.

Power play goals and penalty kills all enjoyed success and simply put… the Hurricane were rolling. The vision was much better and everyone was getting chances with the return of more team play. The coaches became commentators reinforcing the good things they were seeing. Yes, it was a good day to be a Hurricane. And although we almost had the complete top ten plays of the week in one game we were happy to make the final Hurricane 9- Harbour Storm 0.

With the Christmas break looming and the closing out of 2010 upon us it is a good time to reflect on the accomplishments that the Hurricane players have worked for and earned.

-Winning the opening tournament of the inaugural season of the NS Major Bantam Hockey League.

-Posting the best defensive record and most shutouts to date

-The best record at 22-2-0

-Champions of the ESSO Challenge Cup ending the Halifax Hawks three year winning streak

Sunday at the forum will bring back memories to a lot of hockey fans over the years as many great battles have been played out here. Today the Hurricane and Gulls would battle for the second time within twenty four hours in an attempt to stop the Hurricanes from being the first to reach the 20 win barrier.

From the start the Hurricane had better jump, something that had been missing and with the increased speed good things would happen soon. Sure enough the Hurricanes found themselves on the power play. Cole Mulrooney kept the attempted clearing shot inside the blue line and then moved it to Stone Harnish who passed it quickly to Morgan Messenger (Harnish) in the slot. Although not pretty, it was creative, as Morgan backhanded the puck past the Gulls netminder to give the Hurricane a one goal lead.

In the second, play was being controlled by the Hurricane D-men moving the puck and skating away from traffic. The Gulls were back to their old tricks of trying to slow down the Hurricane offense which was having some effect. However the Gulls would soon find themselves in penalty trouble again. Some good work by Christian Tufts on the end boards allowed Josh Shatford to emerge from behind the goal line only to find an open Morgan Messenger on the side of the goal and with a quick feed Morgan (Shatford, Christian Tufts) buried it to make the power play 2 for 2.

The third period had some hiccups and penalty kill was now the special team of choice. While things were looking good initially a bad bounce from a stick on stick collision gave the open Gull a chance to fire one point blank into the Hurricane net.

With the Gulls now within striking distance the final two trips to the sin bin by the Hurricane were going to make things interesting. This time the penalty kill was up to the task and even managed to kill off the few seconds the Gulls would have as part of a five on three. With no scoring threats for the Gulls from there on in the Hurricane once again get the job done. Make the final Hurricane 2 – Gulls 1.

Call 911! Hurricane stuck in a â??Phone Boothâ?

It wasn’t a day to showcase the speed and puck movement that the fans of the Major Bantam league have come to enjoy. In fact, it was good day for motivating rink construction. Play was choppy, with pucks flicked by and into traffic; there just wasn’t any space for... well ... anybody.

Now there was no doubt the small Liverpool arena wouldn’t help the Hurricanes capitalize on their team speed and quickness. Couple that with a trapping Bay Gulls flooding the neutral zone with all five players and you can see this was going to be what is commonly referred to as a “mucker”. The wheels are spinning but you just aren’t going anywhere.

With no score through two periods there was no doubt two different conversations were taking place in the intermission. The Bubba Ray Gulls were in striking distance of an upset and working their system well to earn it. The Hurricanes coaching on the other hand were putting together a counter to get more play in the opposition end. Now it would come down to who executes better.

The defense of the Hurricane became more aggressive initiating the rush with good skating, pressuring the Gulls forwards but when they stuck to their plan ice opened up and the Hurricane were able to get pucks deep.

At the midpoint of the third, Alex Mann fired a shot in to release the forwards to track down the puck. Josh Shatford got there quickly and managed to create enough space for Bronsen to find the loose puck. Bronsen turned to find Morgan Messenger (Benight, Shatford) in the slot who fired top shelf to put the Hurricanes up one.

With the Gulls now forced to open up seeking the tie they found the same frustration in trying to move through the neutral zone and only managed a few minutes in the Hurricane end.

The Hurricane posted another zero and have been fortunate that when the offence isn’t there the defense and goaltending are. It really doesn’t matter how you win them; it’s more about finding a way to win them. The Hurricane are always looking.

Newbridge sees return of Hurricane defense

With concerns arising about the Hurricane effort not more than 24 hours earlier some focus needed to take place. The message was clear; we needed to get back to what works and take responsibility for it. We needed team defense and the offence would come.

Although no score in the first period the Hurricane had chances and some hard luck and good goaltending accounted for the blank on both sides. Overall things looked good, no breakdowns and spurts of offensive chances but no one able to pull the trigger at this point for the Hurricane offense.

With much of the same defensive effort in the second the Hurricane were waiting for their chance and finally on some good hard work down low Catherine Tufts (M. Messenger, Adams) fired a quick release shot from the slot that found a gap under the arm of the Newbridge net minder.

Again in the third there was no sign of letting up on the defensive commitment and it looked like the Hurricane would play it safe denying any offense from the Senators. It started to look like the Hurricane were prepared to take the one goal win, that is, until late in the third, when Newbridge decided to pull their goalie to muster some attack. After corralling the puck in the Hurricane corner down low, Jordan Messenger (Jollimore) would skate up the wall and fire a shot which had better not be icing toward the far end. Fortunately, it found the net and the Hurricane were up two and the coaching staff bit their tongue for not crossing center ice before the attempt.

With Newbridge not content to settle for the 2-0 loss they kept their goaltender out and the coaching staff started looking for their blood pressure medication as again this time Stone Harnish (Nickerson, M Messenger) shot one from the Hurricane side of center only to hit the net again. After not finding the back of the net for much of the game we were two for two from 150 feet. With no power play chances of their own the Hurricane managed four nice penalty kills. Make the final Hurricane 3 – Senators 0. The Hurricane survive the weekend with four points in the bank and look to improve thier play this coming weekend in Liverpool against the Bay Gulls.

Hangover in Halifax or the Four Point Game

After a great result at the ESSO the Hurricanes hit the ice against the Halifax Hawks but what was this? Who are these kids? Let’s face it no jump in our step. Puck movement nonexistent? Forget Hurricane, we were trying our best to stir up a gentle breeze. Give credit where credit is due the Hawks were working hard and obviously up for the game as they pressured our defense while we grew some tree roots in our feet. In order for there to be a game here today we had better find some effort and fast.

Halifax struck first Cooper Boyd(unassisted) and that never sits well, a bad taste was already forming in our mouths. It wasn’t until a shot fired from the point that was tipped into the air and dropped behind the challenging Hawks goaltender did the Hurricane respond. The loose puck put a couple of Hurricanes on full crash mode and Alex Nauss (unassisted) managed to bury that biscuit to tie the game. Less than a minute later Morgan Messenger (unassisted) caught the Hawks goaltender off guard as he fired a low blast with some heat on it through the five hole to put the Hurricane up one going into the third.

Halifax scored to tie in the third just over two minutes in on a net drive of their own Campbell Pickard (Stewart) as the Hawks forward beat the Hurricane containment and batted the puck by the goaltender to tie it. Both teams were battling hard late in the game and play was accumulating minutes in the neutral zone. Pucks were being dumped in and out of each end and the few chances that presented themselves were thwarted on both sides by the goaltending of Wile and for the Hawks; MacDonald. Goaltending had to be solid in both ends as play was scrappy at times.

With twenty seconds to go and a tie looming the Hurricane staff called a timeout and Coach Muise drew up the proverbial “Hail Mary” breakout that hopefully, all things working out, would get the puck to the neutral zone with an odd number attack. After the face off win, step one was accomplished and with Mann controlling the puck phase two took place. The hard rim was meant for a sprinting Morgan Messenger who raced to the weak side wall where he managed to capture the puck. Morgan pulled the puck back looking to see if phase three was in effect. Sure enough, Keegan Cooke had released and was building speed heading north to the Halifax end. Keegan maintained his speed and received a crisp pass from Morgan Messenger where he went in all alone and pulled off a great move to leave the goaltender sliding to the far right of the net and the puck laying in the crease, almost there, inches from the line, when the unfortunate back check effort of the Hawks defender found himself making contact with the puck to give it that little bit it needed to cross the line Keegan Cooke (Jollimore). Pack your bags and get out of here before someone turns around, I think the Hurricane just stole one with 8 seconds left on the clock. Hurricane 3 – Hawks 2.

Western Hurricanes win Esso Major Bantam Tournament

Just as predicted it was a force that hit the Civic center but a few penalty calls along the way made it interesting.

The Hurricane squad was settling back into its normal four line routine they started at the beginning of the season as they took on the Bedford Barons team. Bedford, having a good tournament of their own, found themselves in the finals against probably an opponent they wish they didn’t have. Let’s face it; nobody really likes a Hurricane and especially not one that is gathering steam.

As the light shone through the windows of the Forum not an hour early as the Timbits hit the ice, some gentle oohs and aahs were coming from the parents and grandparents. No screaming fans, just little subtle waves to the bench, no refs getting blasted for calls and non-calls, you couldn’t help but think that you were sitting in the eye of the Hurricane. Especially when you look back at the recent heated exchange of coaching tips from the Moncton game earlier. Yup no doubt about it we were in the eye all right and you had a gut feeling things were going to get ugly soon as we came out the other side.

With play underway in the championship game, the effort and commitment to what was quickly becoming known as “Hurricane Hockey” started to hem in the Barons and frustrate their efforts to get anything going. A little break in the storm came quickly as the Hurricanes made their first trip to the sin bin. The penalty killing units were up and the pride in the way they were able to eat up precious seconds without allowing scoring chances was starting to show. The Zebras were earning their stripes as well as the second power play chance would go to the Bedford boys and residency issues were starting to be questioned. Those were put to rest as 45 seconds later things would even up.

The Hurricanes first power play would come late in the first and wouldn’t need long to prove effective as Bronsen Benight (Mann, M. Messenger) would tip a shot from the point behind the Barons goalie to get the team on the board.

In the second the Hurricane were wreaking havoc and yet once again found themselves on the penalty kill. This time Bronsen sent the puck deep in the Barons end and decided to go up against two Baron defenders to see if he could knock off some more time. Hulkamaniacs would have been proud as Bronsen out battled both Baron defenders and stuffed the puck home on a quick net drive to put the Hurricane up 2 and stun the Bedford faithful.

Going to the third period break, up two, with fifteen miles to go would mean the Barons would have to score three to win and when mentioned in the locker room it was unanimous that wasn’t going to happen.

As the minutes ticked off in the third period Morgan Messenger (unassisted) silenced even the whispers of hope when he found the twine with just less than six minutes remaining. An empty net goal by the Hurricanes was followed by the Barons only marker. A play that had the Hurricanes caught in a little premature post game celebration and was fair trade off as the Hurricane poured on the ice seconds later as the 2010 Esso Major Bantam Hockey Champions.

With the skies clearing now the Hurricane Management and Staff wanted to express their sincere thanks to all the parents and grandparents for supporting the players with the hotel accommodations, gas and food to make this week and the tremendous result possible. You may not have a number on the score sheet but you are number one in our hearts and a big part of Hurricane Hockey!

Morgan Messenger was named Tournament MVP, and both he and Alex Mann were named to the Tournament's First All-Star Team.

Weather Update â?? Category 5 Hurricane predicted for Sunday afternoon

With the air a little more casual than normal the thought was we may not be ready but effort is not determined by how you get dressed before your play but what you’re willing to do once the puck drops. Just like a flick of the switch the Hurricane were off.

Dirty ice is not the ideal situation for a puck moving team who likes the fast, clean ice but you learn to adapt. Cape Breton we found out early had made some adaptations of their own since our last meeting as the big forwards were working hard and the Cougar d-men were holding the line. Through the first period to the cleaning the score was even but the effort of the Hurricane players was there and they would not be caught off guard this night before getting up to speed.

The second would see the Hurricane doing a better job of applying pressure and with a quick transition from the back end Morgan Messenger (unassisted) wheeled through the neutral zone and fired a shot before the Cougar goaltender could get set to ignite the Hurricane bench. The excitement was short lived though as what appeared to be a hard dump in by the Cougars took a couple of crazy bounces off the end boards and caught in our goal keepers skate barely crossing the goal line.

If you needed something to keep you on the edge of your seats (like you needed that) Morgan Messenger gets hauled down and awarded a penalty shot. A nice move was matched with a Gumby like save to hold the game at one.

So we enter the third period looking for the winner. Determined to shut down the Cape Breton efforts the Hurricane d-men were denying any and all attempts by the Cougars to get shots. When a Cougar defensemen tried to turn up ice with five minutes gone in the third he was met by Morgan Messenger who out muscled him off the puck to attack the net from the corner. A sprawling Cougar defensemen attempted to take away the cross ice pass but a nice saucer pass over him allowed Josh Shatford (M Messenger) to tee it up and bury it in the empty net before Gumby could reappear and get a leg across.

A shutdown effort from then on kept Cape Breton at bay vaulting the Hurricane into semi-final Sunday. Hurricane 2 - Cougars 1. Next up Moncton

Hurricanes fuel up for Esso as Cougars sputter

The ability to move the puck by the Hurricanes back end showed in Game 2 as the play would be in the Cougar end zones for much of the game. Offensive chances as a result were reduced.

It was a power play goal again that would start the scoring with five minutes to go in the first as Mitch Baker fired a blast from the right point that got into the shoulder gear of the Cape Breton net minder and bounced to a wide open Jordan Messenger (Baker).

Quinn Nickerson finally got to see some game time this weekend after returning from an earlier injury and his physical presence was felt by the Cougar forwards.

After being a little snake bitten last weekend, Bronsen must have dialed in his shot during the week as he bit back with two goals, Benight (Shatford) with under five minutes in the second and again at around the eight minute mark of the third, Benight (M Messenger). Jake Wile was solid when the Cougars managed to get a few offensive chances.

Catherine Tufts (J Messenger, Duffus) slid a nice low shot to the corner to cap off her Movie Star weekend complete with CBC interview for the French station. Not to say that she didn’t pay a little bit for her 15 minutes of fame. Even coach Muise’s interview we are sure will require some editing to make it look better.

A strong team performance allowed a more controlled 4-0 win and we can now finally look forward to the Esso Tournament. The challenge of playing the teams from New Brunswick is one we all look forward to so let’s get those homework assignments completed and plenty of rest.

Cougars Battle - Hurricane Respond

After a calming public skate in Chester with smiling faces and laughter in the stands things started to get ugly quickly as the battle of the two big teams hit the ice. In the first period the Hurricane power play only needed its second opportunity before the opening goal of the game would come from Josh Shatford (Mann, Messenger).

Strangely in practice earlier in the week it seemed the penalty kill would be the better specialty team of the two but early in the second once again the Hurricane power play would strike this time Alex Nauss (Mann, Jollimore).

A physical game found the Cougars on the power play where they were able to notch a power play goal of their own. Just to keep the road weary Cape Breton fans into it the Cougars sent home their second to head to the intermission tied at two.

The goals scored by the Cougars were opportunistic but they all count and we just didn’t have the battle level we had come to expect; it was good but just not good enough. A commitment to raise the work ethic was the clear message and the Hurricane responded.

When Morgan Messenger (Benight, Cooke) fired one pass the Cougar keeper just under two minutes in, the traditional third period effort the Hurricane team has shown had returned.

After a couple of missed power play efforts by the Hurricane the Cougars had thought they had escaped unscathed but Josh Shatford ( Benight, M Messenger) managed to do what the power play couldn’t and the Hurricanes found themselves up by two and controlling the play.

However, penalty trouble is the great equalizer in hockey and the Hurricane penalty kill would get a stiff test and need to dig in. With over four minutes of penalty kill ticking off clock the Cougars had nothing to show for it and to erase any doubt Keegan Cooke (Nauss) registered the third unanswered goal of the period with minutes left in the game.

The entertainment value was high in this game as all aspects were featured... the speed and puck movement were good and specialty teams executed on both sides along with some nice goaltending by Peterson in nets.

The Hurricane third period effort was the Cougars undoing and you can make the final Hurricane 5 – Cougars 2.

Weather update from Barrington -Storm gets downgraded

With the Harbour Storm battling the injury bug they still played some good hockey in the first period but the depth and speed of the Hurricanes showed as they put on pressure that was had to match.

Things looked like they could have been closer in Barrington but other than a single marker given up in the first period it was a dominating performance in game 1 with the Hurricane firing 8 unanswered goals to blow out the Storm 9-1. Every line had contributions to the tally showcasing the depth of this team. Josh Shatford, Ty Duffus, Christian Tufts and Keegan Cooke all had two goals each with Alex Nauss adding the other.

It was no surprise to the coaching staff that the Hurricanes offence would still produce even without possible contributions from Morgan Messenger who was unavailable this weekend. The Storm appeared to add to their injury list as a couple of hard hits sidelined some bodies that the Storm could have used.

In game two it was all about chances and the Hurricane sure had plenty. Bronsen Benight started his head shaking early and often jokingly wondering how many chances he would need before he would find the back of the net as he whistled shot after shot just off the mark.

The Harbour Storm struggled to find offence and by the end of the second they could only register 5 shots on goal. The Hurricane, even with all the chances they had missed, still had three to their credit as Bronsen Benight(Shatford, Jollimore), Jordon Messenger (Christian Tufts) and Keegan Cooke(Mann) had all popped in helpers by the end of the second period. The third for the Hurricane was all about keeping the shutout and closing down any Storm offence and although some goal mouth scrambles developed that could have gone either way that was about all the Storm could muster. The other shots came from well out to allow the Hurricanes to bend but not break and register another team shutout backstopped by Jake Wile in front of a good crowd in Barrington. Make the final Hurricane 3 - Storm 0.

The Hurricane look forward to Quinn Nickerson returning to practice this week and getting Morgan Messenger back in the lineup. A good job by the affiliated players have all provided valuable contributions to the Hurricanes as the club has managed some injuries of their own.

If everything went the way you talk about it and describe and yes even practice it games wouldn’t need to be played. But the funny thing is; probably no one practices mistakes and they happen a lot.

Forty seconds into the Hurricanes first power play Jordan Messenger (Mann, Baker) put the Hurricanes up one with 9:24 left in the first. About six minutes later, Bedford scored Isnor (Jardine) after a shot taken very high in the goaltending gear of Peterson got a favorable bounce to the open Barons player. The first period would not close out though until the Hurricanes could respond as Morgan Messenger (Jollimore, Nauss) again sent the hometown fans cheering and put the Hurricanes back on top.

As the Hurricanes battled against injuries in the defense group the Bedford Barons took advantage of a drop off in Hurricane pressure and found the equalizer on a quick tip in front from a corner pass Bruce (Robertson, MacLean). Heading to the intermission tied at 2 was not really the game plan no matter how you draw it up.

After a commitment to the defensive side of the puck and the promise of a more consistent and relentless pursuit of the puck was made by the Hurricane players, the third period would be their chance to put up or … well you get the idea.

“Two different teams” were comments heard after the game from one fan in Barrington as the Hurricanes needed only one which they got from Cooke (Shatford, Benight) less than three minutes into the third to clinch the victory. The remainder of the way saw the Hurricanes getting back to their systems. As a result they only allowed five shots to the seventeen they fired at the Barons goaltender who made a few highlight reel saves to keep the Hurricanes from breaking it wide open. You can talk all you want but it is better to say “Well Done than well said” and your BMO Hurricanes showed they can back it up when they need it. BMO Hurricanes 3 Bedford Barons 2.

Metro Centerâ?¦The Big Show

As the boys looked into the stadium seating they got their first taste of the big show. Now to play like the pros. Getting off to a good start was Keegan Cooke (unassisted) potting a goal with just over 5 minutes into the first. Keegan (Duffus) followed up with his second and things were going very much the Hurricanes way. Having a big advantage in territorial play is one thing but one slip up and the Hurricanes found themselves on the wrong side of a two on one which the Barons, Yould (Jardine) executed perfectly to find the back of the net to close out the first.

As the Hurricanes kept up the pressure the Barons were wearing down but it took until just past the midpoint of the second before they were able to answer with a nice wrist shot by Nauss (unassisted) as he walked out from down low and turned into the slot to put the Hurricanes up 3-1.

Four minutes into the third Nauss (Cooke) on the power play pretty much sealed the deal as the Hurricanes went up 4-1. Wile in nets played solid and had to handle a couple of dangerous goal mouth opportunities on some scrambles in front to keep the Barons from adding any more to the score sheet. The Hurricanes nursed some “lower body injuries” throughout the game and missed Nickerson in the line up out with an injury. Morgan Sends a Message

An opening period of quick but sluggish play by both sides left Halifax with a one goal lead Behan (Welsh, Huyghue) on a low shot that made it through traffic.

In the second the Hurricanes answered quickly, with Morgan Messenger (Jollimore) responding just thirty seconds into the frame. About the same amount of time had elapsed, when the Hawks regained the lead on a shot by Behan (Murray, Tomcik), his second of the game. Morgan Messenger (unassisted) not to be outdone put the Hurricanes even again, however, the jump the Hurricanes had grown accustomed to still was not there in the players today.

Knotted at 2-2 at the second intermission, it was going to be a 20 minute fight to the finish. Finally a break! The Hurricanes, on the power play found the energy that was missing through the first two periods. With the first power play unit on, it took only thirty seconds to find the back of the net, and yes, Morgan Messenger (Jollimore, Mann) had his third, giving Barrington fans even more reason to cheer. With a 3-2 lead and effort returning to the Hurricane legs, a miss step provided a power play opportunity for Halifax. A laser top shelf into a very small space, put Halifax even again and it was obvious they would not go away.

Halifax provided the clincher, after a couple great saves by Peterson to put them in the lead for good. While Halifax handed the Hurricanes their first defeat, the third period showed some good teamwork. The BMO Western Hurricanes really appreciated the great support they received by the Barrington fans who made them feel at home. Be sure you get your seat early for the Hurricanes return against the Bedford Barons next Sunday October 3^rd at 12:00 noon for the “Battle in Barrington”.

The Hurricane, Josh Shatford (Jollimore) would trade goals in third with the Valley Blanchard (Thibeault, Rawding) to make the final Hurricane 5- Valley 2.

With the Christmas break looming and the closing out of 2010 upon us it is a good time to reflect on the accomplishments that the Hurricane players have worked for and earned.

-Winning the opening tournament of the inaugural season of the NS Major Bantam Hockey League.

-Posting the best defensive record and most shutouts to date

-The best record at 22-2-0

-Champions of the ESSO Challenge Cup ending the Halifax Hawks three year winning streak

And although the players and affiliates have certainly done their part; having the best support team behind them in the stands goes a long way to contribute to their success.

The BMO Western Hurricanes came to play hockey once again as most of us anticipated the sugar rush to follow Sunday night.

Even with a shorter bench and a little sickness thrown in for some pre Halloween effect the Hurricanes effort is hard to match and the 4-1 win was never in doubt outshooting their opponents 42-17.

A pair of unassisted goals in the third from Cooke and Nickerson were only answered with a single marker from the Valley by Blanchard (Ross).

Another strong performance in between the pipes for Wile helped seal the victory making the final 6-2 Hurricanes.

With the opening tournament championship on the line the players will refocus for an afternoon battle with hopes to cap off a long weekend.
