Glace Bay Panthers, Riverview Ravens open high school hockey Highland Region final Friday

SYDNEY — The School Sport Nova Scotia Highland Region Division 1 hockey championship series between the Glace Bay Panthers and Riverview Ravens will begin on Friday night. 

Game 1 of the best-of-five series will take place at the Cape Breton County Recreation Centre in Coxheath with puck drop slated for 8 p.m. Game 2 will be played on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Coxheath venue. 

Meanwhile, Game 3 of the series is scheduled to take place on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Miners Forum in Glace Bay. The location, dates and times for Games 4 and 5 will be announced at a later date. 

As for Glace Bay, the team finished in second place in the high school league with a 9-6-1-0 record and advanced to the league final after knocking off the Memorial Marauders in two games in their semifinal series earlier this week.

The winner of the series will advance directly to the SSNS provincial championship tournament next month. The loser will play a qualifying game with a berth in the tournament on the line. A date for that game will be confirmed at a later date.

HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY: Glace Bay Panthers, Riverview Ravens to meet in Highland Region final

GLACE BAY, N.S. - The School Sport Nova Scotia Highland Region Division 1 high school hockey championship series has been set.

The Glace Bay Panthers and Riverview Ravens will meet in a rematch of the 2022 championship series after both teams swept their respective semifinal series over the weekend.

On Sunday, the Panthers edged the Memorial Marauders 5-4 to win the series 2-0 at Miners Forum in Glace Bay.

Ryland Hanrahan had two goals and an assist, while Dylin White, Pierce Hutchings and Kale MacDonald netted single goals for the Panthers.

Hudson McGean, Nick Bennett, Sam Gracie, and Lucas Gracie replied with goals for the Marauders.

Glace Bay's Kristian MacKenzie made 25 saves. Memorial's Jack MacPhee stopped 22 of 27 shots.

In Game 1 of the series on Saturday, the Panthers downed the Marauders 8-5 at the Emera Centre Northside in North Sydney.

Brayden MacDonald had three goals and an assist, while Pierce Hutchings had two goals and an assist. White, MacDonald, and Lachlan Pilling also added goals for the Panthers.

Sam Gracie had two goals, while Lucas Gracie, Keagan MacKenzie, and Daniel Young netted goals for the Marauders.

Glace Bay's MacKenzie made 24 saves. Memorial's MacPhee turned aside 33 of 41 shots.

In the other semifinal series, Riverview downed Sydney Academy 5-1 at Centre 200 on Saturday to win their best-of-three series 2-0.

Royce Balcom scored three times, while Braedy MacKenzie and Gahan Rector also buried goals for the Ravens.

Kenzie Carew had the lone goal for the Wildcats.

Riverview's Andrew Burke made nine saves. Sydney Academy's Dylan Lesnick stopped 37 of 42 shots.

A schedule for the Highland Region final was not released at publication time.

SYDNEY, N.S. – The Cape Breton High School Hockey League will kick off its playoffs on Tuesday.

The opening round of the playoffs will see the first-place Riverview Ravens (15-1-0-0) will play the fourth-place Sydney Academy Wildcats (1-15-1-0) while the second-place Glace Bay Panthers (9-6-1-0) will meet the third-place Memorial Marauders (8-9-0-0).

 

 

The playoffs will open with Game 1 of the best-of-three series between the Ravens and Wildcats on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre. Game 2 is slated for Friday at 8 p.m. at the Cape Breton County Recreation Centre in Coxheath. Game 3, if necessary, will be determined at a later date.

Meanwhile, the Panthers and Marauders will begin their series on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Emera Centre Northside in North Sydney. Game 2 will be played at 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Miners Forum in Glace Bay. Game 3, if needed, will be announced at a later date.

The series winners will move on and play for the School Sport Nova Scotia Highland Region championship. More information about that series will be confirmed at a later date.

COXHEATH, N.S. – The Riverview Ravens continued their dominance in the Cape Breton High School Hockey League on Friday night.

Riverview blanked the Memorial Marauders 4-0 at the Cape Breton County Recreation Centre in Coxheath.

Daniel Symes, Matthew Burke, Luc Sampson and Josh Novak netted goals for the Ravens (14-1-0-0).

With the loss, the Marauders’ record falls to 7-8-0-0.

Riverview’s Andrew Burke stopped all 18 shots he faced. Memorial’s Jack MacPhee turned aside 17 of 21 shots.

Cape Breton High School Hockey League action resumes on Saturday with the Glace Bay Panthers hosting the Memorial Marauders at 7 p.m. at Miners Forum in Glace Bay.
