COXHEATH, N.S. – The Glace Bay Panthers were the top team in the Cape Breton High School Hockey League all season and they continued the successful season on Tuesday night in Coxheath.
Glace Bay claimed the School Sport Nova Scotia Highland Region Division 1 championship, completing a two-game sweep of the Riverview Ravens with an 8-6 win at Cape Breton County Recreation Centre.
The Panthers win the best-of-three series 2-0.
Cohen McNeil scored twice and added an assist while Jesse Cathcart had two goals. Hudson Clarke, Ty Oliver, Garrett MacIntosh and Tyson Boland each scored single markers for the Panthers.
Owen Buckley had two goals and two assists while Matthew Burke had two goals and Gahan Rector and Rory Mills, who left the game in the second period with an injury, chipped in goals for the Ravens.
Glace Bay’s Brandon Cole made 21 saves. Riverview’s Kayden Mollons stopped 28 of 35 shots.
Entering the third period, Glace Bay had a 5-2 lead. They later made it 6-2 early in the third, but Riverview responded with two goals of their own to make it 6-4.
Oliver would make the score 7-4 just past the seven-minute mark of the final frame, before Burke scored twice to pull the Ravens to within one. MacIntosh would seal the deal for Glace Bay with an empty net goal with 56 seconds to play.
In the regular season, the Panthers finished in first place in the four-team Cape Breton league with a 14-2-1-0 record.
Glace Bay also won three of the four local high school tournaments including the Mae Kibyuk Memorial Green and Gold Tournament in North Sydney in November, the Panther Classic in Glace Bay in December, and the Blue and White Contractor Cup in Membertou last month.
Depending on the completion of the tournament, Glace Bay also holds a spot in the Red Cup Showcase semifinal. The semifinal and final games were postponed earlier this month due to a snowstorm and no date has been announced for when those games will be played at publication time.
Glace Bay will advance to the School Sport Nova Scotia provincial championship next week. The event will be hosted by Riverview at the Cape Breton County Recreation Centre.
A schedule for the provincial championship was not made public at publication time.
