MEMBERTOU — Four consecutive late-game goals from Ty Oliver helped the Glace Bay Panthers capture Sunday’s championship in Blue and White Contractor Cup high school hockey tournament Sunday at the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre.

Dylin White and Garrett MacIntosh opened the scoring in the first and second periods before Oliver went on his scoring spree late in the second period, beginning with a power-play goal 12 minutes in, followed by a third-period hat trick.

Hudson Clarke led with three assists for the Blue Division Panthers, while MacIntosh had two helpers. Oliver assisted on MacIntosh’s second-period goal.

Clarke also led all scorers in the tournament with 14 points (three goals and 11 assists), followed by Oliver (seven goals, six assists) and MacIntosh (five goals, eight assists), who tied with 13 points.

Glace Bay goalie Brandon Cole made 16 saves in the shutout, while Kayden Mollons stopped 23 of 29 shots for the White Division Ravens, who were winners of last year’s tournament.

Oliver and MacIntosh, along with Kale MacDonald, Kyle Nearing and Tyson Boland, also helped capture the Glace Bay-hosted Panther Classic last month.

In semifinal action on Saturday:

 

Riverview Ravens 4, Hants East Tigers 3

The Ravens rallied after the period en route to Sunday’s championship.

Lucas Phillipo, Marcus Kelly and Rory Mills netted goals for Riverview.

Jack Miller and Tyler Stewart scored for the Tigers.

Riverview netminder Mollons made 17 saves, while Hants East counterpart Brady Penney stopped 26 of 29 shots.

 

Glace Bay Panthers 6, Memorial Marauders 5

A pair of second- and third-period goals from Clarke helped push the Panthers into Sunday’s championship.

Pierce Hutchings, Dylan MacLean, MacIntosh and Kyle MacLean added single markers for Glace Bay.

The Marauders replied with Sam Gracie and Malcolm Hull each scoring twice, while Daniel Young added a goal.

Glace Bay’s Kristian MacKenzie made 19 saves, while Memorial’s Jack MacPhee turned aside 26 of 32 shots.

 

Round-robin play

The Horton Griffins and the host team for the tournament, the Sydney Academy Wildcats, each bowed out in round-robin losses Saturday morning.

The Marauders beat the Wildcats 6-5 in OT. Sam Gracie led the Marauders with two goals, followed by single markers from Brodie Vickers, Davis MacInnis, Andrew Leblanc and overtime scorer Josh Reashore.

Nolan Neville, Brayden Tubrett, Noah White, Brady MacDonald and Charlie Francis replied for the Wildcats.

Andrew Forrest made 19 saves for Memorial. William Hussey stopped six of nine shots for Sydney Academy before being replaced by Brody Campbell, who turned away 21 of 23 shots.

Meanwhile, Hants East shut out Horton 3-0.
 

Up next

Riverview will host the final local high school hockey tournament of the Cape Breton High School Hockey League Feb. 1-4, with the annual Red Cup Showcase to be held at the Cape Breton County Recreation Centre in Coxheath.
